Blog Birthday Love
By Scott Nicholson
http://www.hauntedcomputer.com/
Here I am at Jo Jo’s Book Corner for her first bloggy birthday party and I don’t have any presents except maybe a
Kindle or some free e-books. *JoJo does Happy Dance*
I keep looking around expecting one of these hunky dudes to pop up out of a big birthday cake. All I know is I’m keeping my shirt on.
Part of the mission of the Kindle Giveaway Blog Tour is to celebrate book bloggers. They are doing more for reading than just about anybody else around, sharing a passion for books that sometimes borders on frenzy, especially when a big blockbuster like The Passage or Mockingjay comes out.
But bloggers like JoJo are also doing the important work of spreading the word about new books and authors who might be flying under everybody else’s radar. The newspapers don’t do it anymore, and the traditional press and book review magazines are vanishing. This is an important role that will only get bigger in the future, as the walls of the virtual world erode and we’re all mixed together like a puddle of melted Neapolitan ice cream.
The places we used to meet around books, like libraries and bookstores, have their own challenges and seem to have more digital media than paper books these days. And as the digital revolution continues, we might lose that personal connection that makes reading and sharing ideas so cool.
Sure, there are forums at places like Amazon, Goodreads, and Shelfari, but sometimes they are too big and it can take time to find your communities. That’s where bloggers like JoJo can offer a gathering place that still has personality, and the thousands of book bloggers can each build comfortable, inviting platforms for the people with similar tastes.
As an author and reader, I love bouncing around the different blogs. I love the wild creativity and the giveaways, the reviews and news, and best of all, the author interviews. Blogs are a cool meeting place that can change rapidly and stay current, and in the years ahead they will be helping create trends as readers gain more control over price and content.
And bloggers are also creating today’s bestsellers, with independent authors like Vicki Tyley and Amanda Hocking
(I love her books!!!) getting a push from a few high-profile bloggers just when their sales were heating up anyway. Blogs add that personal touch that makes a big difference to the reading experience.
So a blogger like JoJo, who opens her home here on her birthday to a little-known writer like me, really matters a lot. Most of all, it’s fun to be here, because I can tell from this blog that JoJo is a warm, humorous person.
Sure, I’d love for you to buy all my books (psychological thriller
The Skull Ring is this week’s over-hyped feature), but I’m happy just to be able to get out here on the Internet and be goofy a little.
Usually I am about 10 years behind the times, and once in a while ahead of my time, but as an author I feel the digital era, the book blog era, and independent publishing are colliding at the place where I am happiest and most free. And that’s worth baking a cake over.
Happy Bloggy Birthday, JoJo, and may you have many happy blogging years ahead. Now blow out those candles and let’s get this party started!
